Foundations Expand Climate, Impact PE and Infra Allocations in 2026 (19 - 23 October, 2026)
26 Oct 2026Several Foundations — Soros Economic Development Fund (SEDF), Stella Vermögensverwaltungs GmbH, Friends Provident Foundation, Shell Foundation, and Strioga Family Foundation — have announced investments and partnerships across climate venture capital, impact private equity, social technology, carbon finance and renewable energy infrastructure during 2026. The transactions demonstrate growing institutional demand for specialist investment managers, innovative financing structures and measurable environmental and social outcomes.
1. Soros Economic Development Fund (SEDF) – $15 Million in Climate Venture Capital
SEDF, the impact investment arm of Open Society Foundations, made two commitments: $8 million to SP Ventures’ AgVentures Fund III, an $80 million Brazilian venture capital fund targeting agricultural and climate technologies across Latin America, and $7 million to Persistent’s Africa Climate Venture Builder Fund, a blended-finance vehicle targeting early-stage African climate businesses. Both investments support SEDF's broader regional impact investment strategies, with additional allocations anticipated.
2. Stella Vermögensverwaltungs GmbH – Impact Private Equity and Secondaries
Stella, the investment entity of the Heinz Hermann Thiele Family Foundation, committed capital to Blue Earth Capital’s inaugural global impact private equity secondaries strategy, which secured more than $100 million in aggregate commitments at its January 2026 first close. Separately, Stella awarded responsAbility Investments AG a €200 million emerging markets impact private equity mandate, demonstrating its commitment to diversified impact-focused private markets investments.
3. Friends Provident Foundation – £250,000 Impact Venture Capital Commitment
Friends Provident Foundation committed £250,000 to Social Tech Ventures (STV), a UK-based emerging venture capital manager specializing in early-stage impact technology investments. The fund combines revenue-linked financing and equity investments, targeting businesses addressing financial resilience, healthcare and environmental challenges.
4. Shell Foundation – $53 Million Carbon Finance First Close
Shell Foundation, alongside BNP Paribas Asset Management Alts and British International Investment (BII), supported the $53 million first close of Sistema.bio’s FarmCarbon financing vehicle. The strategy finances agricultural methane reduction through biodigester deployment, using future carbon-credit revenues to provide upfront capital for smallholder farmers across emerging markets.
5. Strioga Family Foundation – European Battery Storage Investments
Strioga Family Foundation, through E Energy Invest, established two European battery energy storage partnerships. In Finland, it partnered with Delta Capacity to acquire the 125 MW / 300 MWh Karppio project, while in Italy it secured a 49.9% equity interest alongside Enfinity Global in the 150 MW / 600 MWh Collesalvetti project. The foundation's investment strategy targets €5 million–€25 million per opportunity, emphasizing minority equity, project co-development and structured infrastructure financing.
What this Signals
These investments highlight expanding opportunities for specialist managers across climate venture capital, impact private equity secondaries, emerging-market blended finance, natural capital and renewable energy infrastructure. Foundations and mission-driven institutional investors are increasingly deploying capital through conventional fund commitments, emerging-manager partnerships, catalytic financing structures and direct project-level co-investments.
